Man killed by police after opening fire on 8 in San Diego

A man was shot dead by police after he opened fire in a pool area of an apartment complex in University City on Sunday evening, reports CBS San Diego affiliate KFMB-TV.

San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman addressed the media to give an update to say the department started receiving numerous calls shortly after 6 p.m. regarding the shooting.

The suspect is described as a white male who was wearing brown shorts and was armed with a gun. He pointed it at police at which point three officers fatally shot him.

A police helicopter that was over the scene witnessed the suspect who appeared to be reloading his weapon before engaging with authorities.

One witness described the shooter as being seated during the shooting and drinking a beer, according to KFMB.

“Our thoughts and prayers — and hearts go out to all the victims and their families and to anyone who witnessed this tragic event,” Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said eight victims suffered gunshot wounds and several are in critical condition at local hospitals.

The motive remains unclear as the investigation is underway. The identity of the suspect or victims haven’t been released.
