“There is nothing that suggests in any way that there could be a terrorist motive behind this action,” Officer Bystrom said.
The injured officer, who was posted at Medborgarplatsen to guard the protesters, suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital, Officer Bystrom said.
A patrol officer, Ronnie Tellberger, told the newspaper Dagens Nyheter that the attack had nothing to do with the demonstration at Medborgarplatsen.
Fatemeh Khavari, a representative for an informal group — Ung i Sverige, or Young in Sweden — told Dagens Nyheter: “We feel sorry for the police. We aren’t afraid for our sake, but it feels terrible for the police. It was a relief that they apprehended the perpetrator so fast. The person could have infiltrated our group. There are so many of us gathered here, and it would be easy to hide in the crowd.”
The organization has been demonstrating for weeks at Medborgarplatsen to protest the deportation of Afghans, including unaccompanied minors, from Sweden to their war-torn country.
