Pence and Tom Price turn to grassroots to push Obamacare repeal

Vice President Mike Pence and HHS Sec. Tom Price hosted a round-table discussion with a dozen grassroots leaders on Friday to put additional pressure on Republican senators as they gear up for a procedural vote sometime next week on legislation that would repeal Obamacare. Four days after the Senate failed to bring the second version of the Better Care Reconciliation Act to the floor, Pence called the meeting with the grassroots leaders “historic.”  As @POTUS Trump said, inaction is not an option. Obamacare is collapsing all across the country. It’s…

Sean Spicer is out, and Melissa McCarthy’s fans are worried this signals the end of her “Saturday Night Live” take on the former White House press secretary.  McCarthy’s Spicer impression became a “Saturday Night Live” highlight after she debuted it in February. Her portrayal of a very belligerent “Spicey” was such a hit that she reprised the role several times on “SNL.”  To impersonate the former press secretary, McCarthy donned a wig and suit and almost always stood behind a White House podium — even when her character zoomed through…

Notebook: The Annie Leibovitz of the Alt-Right

Duke believes in the primacy of visual culture, and most right-wing figures, he says, don’t take enough care to make themselves look good. Newt Gingrich, he tells me, is “disheveled”; Steve Bannon is a “schlub”; Trump’s hair is “problematic.” At the same time, he thinks left-leaning media outlets — which is to say, just about anything other than Breitbart News and The Drudge Report — go out of their way to present the right in a negative way. Recently, he drew my attention to New York magazine’s March cover story…

Right and Left React to Trump’s Interview, Health Care and More

_____ • Jeet Heer in The New Republic: “If Sanders-style democratic socialism is to become the core of the Democratic Party, its adherents will have to win over those who supported Clinton-style progressivism. There are surely few worse ways of accomplishing this than demanding that they “bend the knee,” which is more likely to breed resistance than assent. Convincing Democrats to adopt a more radical politics is challenging enough without trying to insult and humiliate them into submission.” Mr. Heer peers into the political realignment occurring on the left, with…
